Sony PlayStation 3

Picture
Sony PlayStation 3 or PS3 is Sony’s seventh generation or era of video game console, and the third of the PlayStation gaming console series, which succeed PlayStation and PlayStation 2 video gaming console. The much anticipated PS3, which finally is launched and sold on stores’ shelves, competes with Microsoft XBox 360, which has a year lead, and Nintendo Wii which will be launched in December. The PS3 is powered by 3.2 GHz Cell Broadband Engine processor which incorporates PowerPC-based “Power Processing Element” (PPE) and various 3.2 GHz Synergistic Processing Elements (SPEs) and other elements or units connected via an Element Interconnect Bus, and comes with 256 MiB of Rambus XDR DRAM clocked at CPU die speed, and RSX graphic processing unit (GPU) running at 550 MHz with 256 MiB GDDR3 VRAM clocked at 550 MHz.

Sony PlayStation 3 20 GB edition (left) and premium 60 GB edition (right)

PlayStation 3 features support for standard and0 HDTV (full HD at 2 channels) resolutions (up to 1080p60), HDMI 1.3 and component video connectivity options, supports 7.1 digital audio, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby 5.1ch, DTS, LPCM and other audio format, comes with Blu-ray Disc drive which supports wide variety of DVD and CD formats, 20 GB / 60 GB 2.5″ SATA150 hard disk pre-installed with Linux, and has network connectivity options via USB 2.0, Bluetooth 2.0 (EDR), Wireless Controller Bluetooth, and gigabit Ethernet port, plus IEEE 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi at 60GB premium PS3 configuration, which also include Memory Stick, CompactFlash or SD/MMC flash memory slot. PS3 is also a music player, movie player, picture viewer and Internet browser. The PlayStation 3 weighs about 5 kg and measures 9.8 cm × 32.5 cm × 27.4 cm. PS3 also has PS3 SIXAXIS wireless controller that is nearly identical to that of the predecessor’s DualShock, with features such as finer analogue sensitivity, more trigger-like R2 and L2 buttons, a PS button, and a USB mini-B port for charging the internal battery and use for wired play.

Digit has a first look on the Sony PlayStation 3 demo console and concludes that ‘hysically, it’s a monster of a machine. At 5 kilograms the console is pretty heavy, perhaps heavier than you’d imagine when you see it. It’s also very, very shiny: it collects fingerprints like crazy, perhaps even beating the iPod’s ability to do so. Make sure you add a soft cloth to your launch day shopping list otherwise you’ll be smudging and scratching it up in no time. The gaming, network functions and Blu-ray Disc player all add up to living room fun but only if you’re got an HDTV. Consumers with standard definition sets might do well to sit tight until they have a TV that does the PS3′s picture quality justice, because there just doesn’t seem to be enough to justify the hefty price tag if you won’t be getting the full effect of the graphics.

The Seattle Times said that PS3 is nifty but it’s a bit too pricey with comment that it might be worthwhile if the PS3 were the greatest device ever for the living room. But its controls are a little quirky for people who aren’t PlayStation fans, and it’s not clear whether the PS3 will be as good for downloading movies and TV shows as the Xbox and Apple’s upcoming set-top box. Those limitations, combined with the high price, could scare away most of the mainstream consumers building out their high-definition TV setups.

BBC has a fan’s view after the first play experience on PlayStation 3 which concludes that “having only played the PS3 for a day, my initial thoughts are that it is absolutely sensational. The wireless controller, on-screen format and graphics quality is nothing like any other console I have used. Its functionality (CD, DVD, Blu-ray, music, photos, internet, games) now allows the PS3 to be the only machine stacked underneath the TV. It goes without saying that the graphics and playability were phenomenal but the real winner for me was the network gaming aspect which was very easy to use.”

USA Today compares Sony PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii, and concludes that for PS3, to get the most out of this sleek black machine’s horsepower, you’ll need a HDMI audio-video cable (not included) to connect the PS3 to your HDTV, while the Wii is the best pick for younger gamers. Players will be able to download hundreds of Nintendo classics such as Super Mario Bros. for a few bucks each, or players can watch free streaming online content via Wii Channels.

Xbox 360 Elite

Picture
It seems like a very long time since I reviewed the Xbox 360. In fact Microsoft's second console has been with us for nearly two years - it launched in the UK on 2nd December 2005, and I can still remember sitting up all night making sure that I had the review written in time for launch day. Microsoft did very well to bring its console to market so long before both Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii, and since Sony chose to delay the PS3 launch in Europe, the X360 stole a 16 month march on its archrival. But despite the long wait for the PlayStation 3, it did bring with it some significant advances for high definition gaming. Now Microsoft is hitting back with an update to its already impressive console, in the shape of the Xbox 360 Elite.

I should probably point out that the original Xbox 360 options are still available, although the prices have dropped to reflect the arrival of the Elite. The previous top end Premium Xbox 360 now carries a price tag of £249.99, while the entry level Core machine is available at a Wii rivalling £179.99. This allows the Elite to slide in at the top with a price of £299.99, which is actually cheaper than I expected, and a significant £125 less than the PS3. Of course you are getting a Blu-ray player with the PS3, but if you're just looking for a games console, the additional Blu-ray functionality is just a costly extra.

So, what differentiates the Elite from the X360 that's been on sale for almost two years? Well, it's black. I know that the colour may not be the most important or compelling update for many, but the Elite really does look better than its off-white siblings. The funny thing is that when the X360 launched I thought it looked great, but the subsequent releases of the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii have taken much of the shine of Microsoft's machine, at least from an aesthetic point of view. The Elite on the other hand, has a certain understated, even stealthy design characteristic. Yes, the gloss black PS3 maintains the more striking of the two, but it's also a dust and fingerprint magnet, especially since my 19 month old daughter seems to like wiping her grubby little paws on it. But the matte finish of the Elite suffers no such woes, while the silver detailing of the DVD tray and the hard drive has far more visual impact when surrounded by black rather than white.

The good: Excellent selection of games, including many 360-only exclusives; all games are in native high-definition; user-friendly Dashboard interface; supports wireless controllers and accessories; Xbox Live service offers online multiplayer (with matchmaking and voice chat) and content downloads for most games; backward compatible with many--but not all--original Xbox titles; doubles as a superior digital media hub and Windows Media extender; online Marketplace allows easy purchases of minigames, add-on gaming content, high-def movies, and TV shows.

The bad: The Elite fails to correct most of the annoyances of the original 360 version: the noisy DVD drive and cooling fan; a gigantic, oversize power supply; no built-in wireless networking; only three USB ports; a substandard DVD player; online gaming requires a paid subscription to Xbox Live; proprietary wireless format limits third-party accessories.

The bottom line: While it's neither a must-have upgrade for existing 360 owners nor as feature-packed as the PS3, the Xbox 360 Elite's combination of top-notch gaming and digital media features make it the current game console of choice.

Hi-tech MP3 shoes

Picture
When you talk about taking your music with you wherever you go, you can picture some rather compact and sleek looking. However, the smaller you make your player, the better it sells and the richer you get. How about having a player that does not even need to be carried but is a part of your dressing? How about having a CD-ROM and some speakers in your shoe? Pretty interesting, isn’t it? It is still just a concept shoe. It will take a while to hit our markets and before that, the production chain.

Megatron convertible shoes

How about having your shoes magically change into some Transformers to kill the evil power. It sounds so Manga and Japanese. Well, it may only sound so, but these are actually shoes when not in their fighter form. Called the Transformers Sports Label series, it includes convertible Nike shoes. Better hope you have 6” shoes so that you can use these. They come as Convoy and Megatron and each sport a miniature pair of Nike 7.0 shoes.
